What is Jesmonite I hear you ask? Well, this is the material I use for all my makes and it’s quite simply a water based acrylic combined with gypsum, a natural mined mineral. It is an eco-friendly alternative to resin and has a tactile, smooth stone like finish when made.
What’s more, it contains no toxins due to its water based compund and is VOC free. This isn’t exactly a new product to the market as it was invented in the 1980’s by Peter Hawkins but over the last few years, and particularly throughout Covid, it’s use and popularity has increased. Intially, it was primarily used in the construction industry for building surface materials and is now used my many small businesses like mine, sculptors and artists to create home statement pieces.
I really enjoy using Jesmonite and selected it as my chosen material to set up my small business due to it’s natural, susainable origins, versatility and beautiful output. It’s an incredibly versatile material and I use it to create a variety of homeware pieces such as vases, pots, clocks and bigger items like coffee tables. The finish is particularly tactile as it’s smooth and stone like creating a fabulous statement piece for your home.
